Root vegetables grow below the soil surface, which means soil structure, organic matter, and nutrient availability are even more critical than for leafy crops. Winter composting prepares the soil a month in advance for strong root development, uniform tuber formation, and higher yields.

Winter composting builds nutrient reserves before planting, and prevents nutrient shocks during early growth, encouraging strong root and stolon development, reducing the need for heavy fertilisation later.

When to Apply Compost

For fields planned for potatoes: Best timing is Late autumn to mid-winter. Compost should be applied at least 6-8 weeks before planting.

For other root vegetables: Apply compost during winter soil preparation. Avoid fresh or partially decomposed compost close to planting
